Cameroon claimed their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after defeating Malawi 3-0 in Sunday’s final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
Malawi made an encouraging start, with Temwa Chawinga testing Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina during the opening exchanges. However, the Indomitable Lionesses soon took control.
Marie Ngah opened the scoring in the 20th minute, reacting quickest after Naomi Eto’s effort had been saved by Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo.
Eto doubled Cameroon’s advantage ten minutes later, turning brilliantly inside the penalty area before finishing into the bottom corner.
Cameroon effectively settled the final in first-half stoppage time. Eto reached the ball ahead of Sikelo and crossed for Ngah, who headed home her second goal to make it 3-0 at the break.
Malawi attempted to respond after the restart. Tabitha Chawinga had a penalty appeal rejected following a VAR review before forcing Bihina into a save, while Temwa narrowly missed from the rebound.
Cameroon protected their advantage comfortably to complete the victory and secure the continental crown at the fourth attempt, having lost their previous three WAFCON finals.
For tournament debutants Malawi, the defeat brought an end to a remarkable campaign that saw the Scorchers reach the final and qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
